I stopped by The Poachers Pocket in Chelynch for Saturday lunch, and it’s exactly what you want from a traditional Somerset pub. Cosy, welcoming, and serving up proper home-cooked food with no fuss.
I went for the braised beef in red wine, which came with potatoes and seasonal veg. The beef was slow-cooked until it was falling apart, and the sauce had that deep, rich flavour you only get from a proper red wine gravy. The veg was fresh, the potatoes were spot on, and the whole thing was the kind of meal you don’t rush.
For dessert, I had the apple and sultana crumble with custard. It was everything a crumble should be – crisp, buttery topping, soft spiced apples, and just the right amount of sultanas. The custard was smooth and generous, exactly how it should be.

If you like a proper country pub with good food and a relaxed atmosphere, The Poachers Pocket is worth a visit. The service is friendly, the portions are generous, and it’s the kind of place you’ll want to linger a little longer.
