I’ve received several requests to review spots near Taunton and Wellington. So today, I decided to visit the charming village of Monkton Heathfield, just outside Taunton, to check out “The Famous Merry Monk Carvery”.
Located in the growing village of Monkton Heathfield, just outside Taunton, The Merry Monk is a popular independent bar and carvery restaurant. Angie and Mike, with over 39 years of experience in the trade, have been managing the establishment for a decade.
The main attraction at The Merry Monk is undoubtedly their famous carvery, which draws locals and visitors from further afield. They take pride in using locally sourced meats and serving a delectable array of seasonal vegetables.
The Experience
I indulged in a classic carvery spread: succulent roast topside of beef, juicy roast leg of pork, and tender turkey breast, all accompanied by a selection of fresh vegetables, a perfectly crisp Yorkshire pudding, crunchy crackling, stuffing balls, and rich, flavourful gravy.
The restaurant was bustling and busy, a testament to its popularity, so I highly recommend booking in advance to secure a spot. Despite the full house, the atmosphere remained warm and welcoming, thanks in no small part to the friendly and attentive staff who ensured that everyone felt right at home.
The Merry Monk delivers on its promise of a solid, satisfying carvery experience. The quality of the meats, the fresh vegetables, and the classic trimmings all come together to make for a hearty meal that hits the spot.
Whether you’re dining as a couple or a large party, the carvery here is dependable and enjoyable. I left with a full stomach and a smile, already planning my next trip back.
