For my first restaurant review of 2025, I journeyed to The Lion at West Pennard, a charming refurbished 19th-century country inn on the A361, just a short drive from Glastonbury. The exterior promises traditional British hospitality, and the interior does not disappoint, with its blend of rustic charm and modern comfort.
The menu at The Lion is a testament to local produce, with each dish crafted to reflect the season. My main course was apple braised duck breast, with the duck cooked to perfection. It was delightfully tender. The accompanying braised chicory added a subtle bitterness that balanced the sweetness of the apple, while the potato rosti provided a comforting, earthy base, all rounded off with a rich red wine jus.
For dessert, I indulged in the Winter Fruit Mess – a delicious concoction of seasonal fruits layered with light, fluffy chantilly cream and crunchy meringue. It was the perfect end to the meal, combining textures and flavours in a symphony that celebrated the colder months.
The Lion at West Pennard not only serves fantastic food but also provides an atmosphere of warmth and welcome that makes it a must-visit for anyone in or near Glastonbury. Whether you’re there for the food, the history, or the ambiance, you’re in for a treat.
What’s astonishing is that I had no idea The Lion existed, and I live only 15 minutes away. Despite having a very informative website, it wasn’t easy to find in general online searches for local restaurants. I’m glad I managed to discover this gem.
