Root in Wells, Somerset: My Review

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Root, a modern restaurant in the heart of Wells, Somerset, that’s turning heads with its creative veg-led, sharing plates concept. This exciting spot earned a well-deserved Michelin Bib Gourmand award in March 2023, signalling its commitment to delicious food at great value.

Root in Wells passionately embraces the power of seasonal, local produce. Picture a menu where most dishes shine a spotlight on fresh vegetables, alongside sustainably sourced meat and fish options from Somerset and the South West. It’s a celebration of ingredients at their finest!

Here’s a glimpse into what was a delicious experience on a Tuesday night:

Scallop, Anchovy & Caper Butter

The sweet, delicate scallop was perfectly complemented by the salty, umami richness of the anchovy and caper butter. A pure delight!

Spiced Cauliflower, Lemon Yoghurt, Salsa Macha

This dish was an explosion of flavour! Warm, fragrant spices, creamy lemon yoghurt, and the surprising, zesty punch of salsa macha created a satisfying and complex experience.

Wild Mushroom Skewers, Peanut Sauce

Earthiness galore! The mushrooms were beautifully cooked, and the peanut sauce added a surprisingly satisfying depth and a hint of nuttiness.

You can view Root’s full menu on their website.

If you intend to visit Root, I would recommend making a reservation. Even for a Tuesday night, it was rather busy!

However, it’s worth noting that you must provide at least 24 hours notice when cancelling your table. If you cancel within that time period or do not show up for your booking, you will incur a £20 per person cancellation fee.

I’ve noticed that cancellation fees are becoming increasingly common and I’ll aim to keep flagging these to you in my reviews, where applicable.

In terms of parking, Wells has plenty of options. I recommend Union Street Car Park, which is just a stone’s throw away from Sadler Street, where Root is located.
